What to expect by model year

BMW puts the battery in the boot on most models to balance the car's weight. It sits under the floor or behind a side panel, with a vent tube and a sensor on the negative terminal called the IBS. That sensor tracks every amp going in and out. Most BMWs of the last fifteen years, start-stop or not, were built with an AGM battery, and it should be replaced with the same type and amp-hour rating.
Registration is the step that separates a proper BMW battery change from a quick swap. The car's computer keeps a record of the battery's age and charges an old one harder. If it is not told that a new battery has gone in, it overcharges it and may keep switching off comfort functions to save power. If the capacity or type changes, the car is also recoded. A memory saver is used, and stored low-voltage faults are cleared.

How long does it take to change a BMW 2 Series battery?
About 20 to 30 minutes once the technician is at the car. Add a few minutes if the battery sits in the boot or under a seat, or if the new one has to be registered to the car.
Will I lose my radio and seat settings?

Can you fit the battery in my tower's basement parking?

What happens if a new BMW battery is not registered?
The car carries on charging as if the old, worn battery were still fitted. That overcharges the new one and shortens its life, and warning messages or disabled start-stop can follow. Registration is done with a diagnostic tool at the car, straight after the battery is fitted.
My BMW says 'Increased battery discharge while stationary'. Do I need a new battery?
Not necessarily. The message means something drew more current than expected while the car was parked, or the battery is getting weak. A test separates the two. If the battery is healthy, the cause may be short trips or a unit that is not going to sleep.
