Road test and scan
A technician drives the car with you if possible, feels each gear, checks the linkage and oil level and reads gearbox codes. Many shifting problems turn out to be linkage or oil.
Gearbox out, stripped down
At the workshop the gearbox is removed and opened on a bench. Worn synchros, bearings and seals are measured and photographed, and you approve the parts list before rebuilding.
Refit, adapt, return
The gearbox goes back in with fresh oil. Dual-clutch units get their clutch and gear positions relearned with a scan tool. After a road test the car returns to JBR.
Good to know in JBR
JBR is hard on dual-clutch gearboxes. Creeping forward a metre at a time on the one-way loop or up a basement ramp makes the clutches slip constantly, and in summer heat dry-clutch units can overheat and show a warning. Leaving a gap and then moving off properly helps. Holding the car on a ramp with the accelerator does the opposite. For manuals, heat thins old gear oil, so shifts feel notchy long before anything breaks.

Gearbox repair: common questions
Is a clutch problem the same as a gearbox problem?
No. If every gear is hard to select with the engine running, or the revs rise without the car speeding up, the clutch is the likely cause. If one gear crunches while the others are fine, or the gearbox whines, the fault is inside the gearbox. The road test separates the two.
Does a dual-clutch gearbox always need replacing when it fails?
Not always. Many faults sit in the mechatronic unit, the clutch pack or a sensor, and each can be dealt with on its own. Some only need a software adaptation after a fluid service. A full replacement is the last option, after the unit has been tested.
Can I keep driving with a gear that crunches?
For a short while, but each crunch wears the synchro and the gear's dog teeth further, and metal ends up in the oil. A gearbox that jumps out of gear should not be driven on the highway. Have it inspected before a small repair becomes a rebuild.
