Find and assess
The technician lifts the wheel, finds the hole and checks its size and position. A small hole in the central tread can be repaired. Shoulder and sidewall damage cannot.
Repair or spare
The puncture is repaired and leak tested, or the spare goes on. Pressures are set, the warning light is reset and you are told if the tyre needs replacing soon.

Which punctures can be repaired?
A hole up to about 6 mm across in the central part of the tread. Damage in the shoulder or sidewall, cuts, bulges, and tyres driven flat until the inner wall has scuffed cannot be repaired safely. In those cases the spare is fitted or a new tyre arranged.
Can run-flat tyres be repaired?
It depends on the tyre maker and on how far it was driven with no pressure. Some allow a repair under set conditions if the tyre was not run flat. Many advise replacement, because damage inside the reinforced sidewall cannot be seen. The technician checks the maker's guidance for your tyre.
Is a plug a permanent repair?
A plug pushed in from outside seals the hole and gets you moving. Tyre makers treat a combined patch and plug fitted from inside, with the tyre off the rim, as the permanent repair, because it also lets the inside be inspected. You will be told which was done.
