Flat tyre fix: common questions
My car has no spare wheel. Can you still help?
Yes. If the hole is in the tread we plug it and reinflate the tyre at the car. If the sidewall is cut or the tyre is shredded, a plug will not work, and the car is taken on a recovery truck to have a new tyre fitted.
How far can I drive on a space-saver spare?
A space-saver is for getting to a tyre shop, not for daily use. The speed limit is printed on the wheel, commonly 80 km/h, and the distance limit is in your handbook. It is narrower than your normal tyres, so braking and cornering grip are lower.
Is a plug a permanent repair?
Treat it as temporary. A plug pushed in from outside seals the hole so you can drive, but the inside of the tyre has not been inspected. Have it checked and properly repaired from the inside, or replaced, at a tyre workshop soon after.
