Volkswagen wraps many of its batteries in a fabric or plastic jacket. It is there to shield the battery from engine heat, and in Dubai it matters, so it goes back on the new one. The battery itself is in the engine bay on the Golf, Jetta, Passat, Tiguan and Teramont. The Touareg is the exception on several generations, with the battery under a front seat. The case size and terminal type follow the European standard.
On cars with start-stop, a battery sensor on the negative terminal reports to an energy management unit. That unit needs to know when a new battery is fitted, along with its capacity and type, and the entry is made with a diagnostic tool. An EFB battery can be replaced by EFB or upgraded to AGM, but never downgraded to a standard type. Simple older models without start-stop skip the coding. A memory saver keeps the radio, clock and windows set.
