About the Paceman's battery

Under the retro body a modern MINI is a BMW, and it treats its battery the BMW way. A sensor on the negative terminal reports charge and battery age to the car. When a new battery goes in, it has to be registered with a diagnostic tool so the charging system starts afresh. Skip that step and the car keeps charging a new battery as if it were worn out, which shortens its life and can leave start-stop disabled.
Location varies. On recent Hatch and Convertible models the battery is at the back of the engine bay under a plastic cover near the windscreen. On recent Countryman and Clubman models it is commonly in the boot under the floor. First-generation Cooper S models also carried it in the boot. Most start-stop MINIs use AGM. Because MINIs are often second cars doing short trips, the battery spends much of its life half charged, and heat finishes the job.

How long does it take to change a MINI Paceman battery?
About 20 to 30 minutes once the technician is at the car. Add a few minutes if the battery sits in the boot or under a seat, or if the new one has to be registered to the car.
Will I lose my radio and seat settings?
No. We connect a memory saver before disconnecting the old battery, so the clock, radio presets, windows and seat memory stay as they are.
Can you fit the battery in my tower's basement parking?
Yes. Send the tower name, parking level and bay number, and let security know a technician is coming.
Is registering a MINI battery the same as coding it?
Not quite. Registration tells the car a new battery of the same type and capacity has been fitted, and resets the charging history. Coding is only needed when the type or capacity changes, for example from flooded to AGM. Fitting a like-for-like battery means registration alone is enough.
My MINI key fob will not unlock the car. Battery or fob?
Try the spare fob first. If neither works and no interior light comes on when you open the door with the metal key blade, the car battery is flat. If the lights work but the fob does not, the fob battery is the likely cause.
