That sensor tracks every amp going in and out. Most BMWs of the last fifteen years, start-stop or not, were built with an AGM battery, and it should be replaced with the same type and amp-hour rating.
Registration is the step that separates a proper BMW battery change from a quick swap. The car's computer keeps a record of the battery's age and charges an old one harder. If it is not told that a new battery has gone in, it overcharges it and may keep switching off comfort functions to save power. If the capacity or type changes, the car is also recoded. A memory saver is used, and stored low-voltage faults are cleared.

How long does it take to change a BMW iX3 battery?
About 20 to 30 minutes once the technician is at the car. Add a few minutes if the battery sits in the boot or under a seat, or if the new one has to be registered to the car.
Will I lose my radio and seat settings?

What happens if a new BMW battery is not registered?

My BMW says 'Increased battery discharge while stationary'. Do I need a new battery?
Not necessarily. The message means something drew more current than expected while the car was parked, or the battery is getting weak. A test separates the two. If the battery is healthy, the cause may be short trips or a unit that is not going to sleep.
